Abstract:

An ice storm simulation was performed at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest to evaluate impacts of these extreme weather events on northern hardwood forests. Water was pumped from the main branch of Hubbard Brook and sprayed above the forest canopy in subfreezing conditions so that it rained down and froze on contact with trees. The experiment consisted of five treatments, including a control (no ice) and three target levels of radial ice accretion: low (6.4 mm), mid (12.7 mm), and high (19.0 mm). Two of the mid-level treatment plots (midx2) were iced in back-to-back years to evaluate impacts of consecutive storms. The ice accretion values reported are measurements made on passive collectors using both digital calipers and a water volume approach.

These data were gathered as part of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (HBES). The HBES is a collaborative effort at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, which is operated and maintained by the USDA Forest Service, Northern Research Station.

Methods and protocols used in the collection of this data package
Description:

Passive collectors were constructed from 2.54 cm diameter birch dowels, with six 30-cm long arms radiating out from a central six-way stainless steel connector in six directions (0°, 90°, 180°, 270°, up and down; Fig 3). Four collectors were suspended in the forest canopy using parachute cord (to provide a low resistance surface to facilitate release after icing) at a height of ~15 m prior to the icing, with one collector in each of the four cardinal corners of the 10 x 20 m inner plots. Radial ice accretion on collectors was measured with two methods. First, ice thickness was measured in the field immediately following icing using digital calipers (Vinca DCLA-0605, Clockwise Tools, Inc.) with a manufacturer-specified accuracy of ±0.02 mm. Vertical (v) and horizontal (h) measurements were made at three locations along each individual dowel (six measurements per dowel or 36 measurements per collector). Second, after ice thickness measurements were made in the field, each of the six arms of the collectors were cut at the base with a reciprocating saw, being careful to keep the ice on the dowel intact. Ice-coated dowels were placed individually in plastic bags and transported back to the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest Headquarters where the ice was melted at room temperature and the volume of meltwater from each dowel measured with a graduated cylinder. Ice thickness was calculated from the water volume and an assumed ice density (0.9167 g/cm3).
