Abstract

Soil respiration in 15 stands across 3 sites within the White Mountain National Forest was measured between 2008 and 2020. Stands included in the dataset are part of the Multiple Element in Northern Hardwood Ecosystems (MELNHE) study, a full-factorial NxP fertilization experiment that began in 2011. Soil temperature, soil moisture, and relative air humidity at the time of measurement were also recorded next to or above the soil respiration collar at the time of the soil respiration measurement. Having been cut between 1883 and 1990, stands are representative of different successional stages.

Methods

Soil CO2 efflux (soil respiration) was measured in 15 stands across three sites in the White Mountain National Forest between 2008 and 2020. Sites included Bartlett Experimental Forest, Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, and a location near Jeffers Brook in Benton, NH. The study stands are part of the Multiple Element Limitation in Northern Hardwood Ecosystems (MELNHE) study. Within each of the 13 stands are four treatment plots, each of which has received one of four nutrient treatments annually beginning in 2011: N addition (3 g N m-2 yr-1 in the form of granular NH4NO3), P addition (1 g P m-2 yr-1 in the form of granular NaH2PO4), N plus P (at the same rates), or neither (control). In 10 stands, plots measure 50 m x 50 m including a 10 m buffer on each side to ensure that trees with roots that extend beyond the 30x30 measurement area receive the full fertilization. In two of the mid-successional stands (HBM and JBM), each plot measures 30 m x 30 m including a 5 m buffer. In one early successional stand (C2), each plot measures 45 m x 45 m including a 7.5 m buffer.

In 2008, the LiCOR 6400 system was used for soil respiration measurements, and in each subsequent year, the LiCOR 8100 FCO2 system was used (Licor Biosciences, Lincoln, NE). Measurements were made between 9 AM and 4 PM with most falling between the hours of 10 AM and 2 PM. The number of measurements recorded and the stands in which they were made varied across years. In 2008, ten collars were haphazardly arranged in each plot, and in 2009, those collars were removed and replaced with five collars, also haphazardly arranged in each plot. Locations near boles, boulders, large roots, and areas that would collect water were avoided when placing collars. In 2009 and each subsequent year, soil respiration was measured at each collar with a single 90-second reading. In 2010, those collars were removed and systematically arranged in their final locations. In 2014, two additional collars were added to each plot in 7 systematic locations. Soil temperature was measured simultaneously with soil respiration using a handheld resistance thermometer at a depth of 10 cm adjacent to each collar. Soil moisture was occasionally measured next to the collar at the time of the soil respiration measurement using a soil moisture probe attached to the auxiliary sensor interface of the LiCOR device. Relative air humidity was infrequently measured within the chamber of the LiCOR device at the time of the soil respiration measurement.
