Abstract:	Seeds Abstract Tree seeds sorted and counted from long-term reference area litter traps are presented for 1993 until the present. These data are part of the LTER funded quantification of tree annual productivity. In 2019, trees contributing to the baskets were also tagged, measured, and mapped in collaboration with the Jim Clark lab, Duke University MASTif project. In 2019, we also added further detail on conifer cones, cone scales and seeds collected in the baskets.

Description:

Seeds Methods

Tree seeds are sorted and counted from 0.096 m² catch area baskets (12-15 baskets per site). Seeds are mainly from the autumn collection, but wayward seeds from the spring and late summer collection are also summed in the counts here. Tree species included are: sugar maple samaras (ACSA), American beech nuts (FAGR nut), American beech cupules (FAGRfr), white ash samaras (FRAM), yellow birch catkins (BEAL, note individual seeds not counted), striped maple samaras (ACPE), undifferentiated conifer cones (CONES). In 2019, we also added: red spruce cone scales (PIRUsc), red spruce seeds (PIRUseed), balsam fir seeds (ABBAseed), balsam fir cone scales (ABBAsc), and notes of seeds from less common species (e.g., TSCA, ACRU and SOAM).
