Abstract:	W5 was experimentally whole-tree harvested in the winter of 1983-84. The initial post-harvest surveys were conducted by Jeffrey Hughes in 1984. The species and stem origin (i.e. stem grew from seed, sprouted from a cut stem or was an established stem post-harvest) for all stems in the 1m2 plots were recorded. This data set summarizes the apparent “winners” in both 1984 and 30 years later in 2014 (some evaluated in 2015). There were a total of 13 surveys in these plots that helped clarify the outcomes over time. This data set summarizes from the larger data set. These data were gathered as part of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (HBES). The HBES is a collaborative effort at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, which is operated and maintained by the USDA Forest Service, Northern Research Station.

Methods and protocols used in the collection of this data package

Description:

Each of the eight stem origin plots (25 m × 25 m) was gridded into twenty-five 5m×5m (25m2) “sections”. Twenty-five of the two-hundred 25 m2 sections were randomly selected and further divided into twenty-five 1 m2 permanent plots for intensive study of regeneration (625 1 m2 plots in total. Stems in the stem origin plots were surveyed 13 times in the 30 years since harvest: 1984–1989, 1994–1997, 2001, 2003, and 2014–2015 (Supplementary Table S11 in Cleavitt et al. 2018). These detailed plots provided a record of the species and origin of all stems. The origin of each stem was assigned to one of three classes: advance regeneration, vegetative sprout, or seed. Advance regeneration was defined as stems established in the understory and present prior to harvest. Sprouts were differentiated by their attachment to stumps or large roots, as well as their thicker bases and lack of cotyledon scars.
