Multiple Element Limitation in Northeast Hardwood Ecosystems (MELNHE): Fine Root Biomass

General Information
Data Package:
Local Identifier:knb-lter-hbr.341.1
Title:Multiple Element Limitation in Northeast Hardwood Ecosystems (MELNHE): Fine Root Biomass
Alternate Identifier:DOI PLACE HOLDER
Abstract:

Fine roots from manual root cores from years 2008, 2010, 2014, 2015, 2016, and 2018 collected in all MELNHE stands were picked, sorted, and weighed to determine fine root productivity in response to NxP fertilization.

These data were gathered as part of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (HBES). The HBES is a collaborative effort at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, which is operated and maintained by the USDA Forest Service, Northern Research Station.

Methods and protocols used in the collection of this data package
Description:

Manual 5 cm diameter root cores were taken near each respiration collar plot of the N, P, N+P, and control plots of all MELNHE stands. In 2008, roots at JB and HB were collected. In 2010, roots from all BEF stands except C3 were taken. Stands were resampled during treatment years as follows: C2 in 2014, C1, C4, C6, C7, and C9 in 2015, C3, C5, C8, HB, and JB in 2016, and C2 in 2018. Root cores were taken with PVC pipes hammered 25-30 cm into the ground. Soil cores were divided into 0-10 cm and 10-30 cm increments. Roots of 0-1 mm and 1-5 mm diameter from each depth range were picked and sorted after returning from the field. Roots were dried at 60 °C then weighed.
