Title:Hubbard Brook Nitrogen Oligotrophication (HBNO): Foliar resorption, leaf mass per area, and leaf chemistry of sugar maple and American beech, 2020-2022
Alternate Identifier:DOI PLACE HOLDER
Abstract:

We quantified nitrogen (N) resorption of the two dominant tree species of northern hardwood forests along an elevation gradient using 14 sites at Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, NH. For these calculations, we also quantified the leaf mass per area for both species, sugar maple and American beech. The original data before averaging for combining with chemistry data available in an earlier revision of this dataset. Foliar N of sugar maple increased, and N resorption proficiency (NRP) decreased with increasing elevation. In contrast, foliar N and NRP of American beech did not vary significantly with elevation, suggesting that the mechanisms driving patterns of N resorption were distinct between these co-occurring species. While both species exhibited strong correlations between resorption efficiency of C and N, resorption of both elements was much greater for beech than maple.

These data were gathered as part of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (HBES). The HBES is a collaborative effort at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, which is operated and maintained by the USDA Forest Service, Northern Research Station.

Methods and protocols used in the collection of this data package
Description:

Fourteen sampling plots were established along the elevation gradient from 395 to 780 m a.s.l. in the HBEF. The plots were chosen for canopy dominance by the two focal species, sugar maple and American beech, and they were distributed on well-drained soils and moderate slopes (< 15%) in varying topographic positions. At each plot two healthy canopy trees (co-dominant) of each species were chosen for foliage and litter sampling. The original leaf mass per area file more completely keeps this sampling regime intact while the chemistry and resorption values used an average value fr each tree species per site. In early August of each year (2020 for sugar maple only and 2021-2022 for both species) two sunlit branches from mid-to-upper canopy of each tree were sampled using a shotgun. Representative leaves from each branch were collected and divided into two groups, one for chemical analysis and the other for leaf area and mass determinations; the former were stored in paper bags and the latter were mounted in a plant press until dry.

Litter baskets lined with nylon screening and suspended above the ground were positioned beneath the canopy of each sample tree to collect leaf litter during fall senescence. Senesced leaves were collected weekly starting with first leaf fall in early September at the highest elevation sites and ending in early November with last leaf off at the lowest elevation sites. Leaves were bulked in paper bags to air dry until the collections were complete and ready for subsampling. Samples for mass and area determinations were rehydrated before being stored in a plant press. Fresh leaves and leaf litter for chemical analysis were handled at all times with nitrile gloves.

Pressed leaves were measured for area either on a calibrated LI-2000 leaf area meter or with ImageJ (https://imagej.net/ij/index.html) following scanning. For the leaf mass and area sampling in both 2021 and 2022, 25 fresh leaves and 40 senesced leaves of each species were measured per plot. Samples were dried at 60°C to constant mass and weighed to +/- 1 mg.

Litterfall and foliage samples for chemical analysis were dried at 50 oC for a minimum of 72 hours, then ground to a fine powder using a Wiley Mill. Subsamples of 2 mg were weighed using a microbalance, and samples were analyzed on an isotope ratio mass spectrometer for C and N.
