Abstract:
Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI) and minimum, maximum, and average vapor pressure deficit (VPD) were calculated from meteorological data (temperature, precipitation, and relative humidity) from the 15 net primary production (NPP) study locations on the Jornada Experimental Range (JER) and the Chihuahuan Desert Rangeland Research Center (CDRRC) lands in southern New Mexico, U.S.A.

Description:
Data was downloaded from the 15 NPP study sites on the Jornada Experimental Range and the Chihuahuan Desert Rangeland Research Center and then combined into a larger dataset with precipitation, latitude, temperature, and relative humidity to derive SPEI and VPD. The 15 NPP datasets were assembled using the R script available as an entity in this metadata. Packages get_data.R and spei.r are required to successfully run the script. The package get_data.R is available on the Jornada-IM GitHub repository under climate_metrics and spei.r is available on Greg E. Maurer's GitHub Repository. Description:
A 12-month Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI) was derived using precipitation depths and calculated potential evapotranspiration (PET) using the Thornthwaite method, which requires average temperature and latitude. The SPEI package in R was used for this derivation and was created by Santiago Begueria, Borja Latorre, Fergus Reig, and Sergio M. Vicente Serrano. Certain SPEI values for a few sites were interpolated for up to five months during some time series even though the temperature values were missing. We believe it is based on the 12-month SPEI time scale since it is longer than the missing data. Missing data periods include the following sites and dates (YYYY-MM): G-BASN: 2015-03, 2015-04, 2015-05, 2015-06, 2015-07 G-SUMM: 2015-04, 2015-05, 2015-06, 2015-07 M-NORT: 2014-06, 2014-07, 2014-8, 2014-09 M-WELL: 2014-07, 2014-08, 2014-09, 2015-03, 2015-04, 2015-05, 2015-06, 2015-07, 2015-08 P-COLL: 2014-06, 2014-07, 2014-08, 2014-09, 2015-03, 2015-04, 2015-05, 2015-06, 2015-07 P-TOBO: 2015-03, 2015-04, 2015-05, 2015-06, 2015-07, 2015-08, 2015-09 T-EAST: 2014-06, 2014-07, 2014-08, 2015-03, 2015-04, 2015-05, 2015-06, 2015-07 T-TAYL: 2014-07, 2014-08, 2015-03, 2015-04, 2015-05, 2015-06, 2015-07 T-WEST: 2015-03, 2015-04, 2015-05, 2015-06, 2015-07 S.M. Description:
Vapor pressure deficit was calculated by taking the difference between the actual vapor pressure from the saturated vapor pressure for the average, minimum, and maximum relative humidity to their respective temperatures. Vapor pressure deficit (vpd) = svp-avp Saturated vapor pressure (svp) = 0.6108 * exp(17.27 * T / (T + 237.3)) Actual Vapor Pressure (avp) = rh/100*svp where T is temperature and rh is relative humidity
