Alternate Identifier:DOI PLACE HOLDER
Abstract:

This data package contains rabbit survey data from areas within the Jornada Experimental Range (JER) and Chihuahuan Desert Rangeland Research Center (CDRRC) lands. Two study routes were established in 1996; one in black grama grassland and the other in creosotebush shrubland to compare the impact of herbivores on ecosystem processes between these vegetation types. Parallel studies were established at the Sevilleta LTER site (New Mexico, USA) and Mapimi Biosphere Reserve (Durango, Mexico). Each route is about 6 miles long. Data collected began in April 1996 and includes date and time of spotting lagomorph, species, habitat type, distance from vehicle, and comments on the weather, moon, and anything unusual. Survey is conducted quarterly every year, and this study is ongoing.

Methods and protocols used in the collection of this data package
Description:

Long-term data is collected to determine population densities of rabbits in various habitats in order to test these hypotheses. This study began in April 1996.

The survey is conducted quarterly. The survey is performed at the end of January or the beginning of February, the end of April or beginning of May, the end of July or the beginning of August, and the end of October or the beginning of November. The dates are dependent upon the full moon. The survey should be conducted ± 3 days of the full moon. In determining the appropriate start time for the survey, be sure to start after the end of nautical twilight. The survey requires three people and truck spotlights. One person is in the truck cab driving and recording data while the other two researchers are in the bed of the truck, standing behind the cab on the right and left sides of the truck bed. Each researcher in the truck bed waves the spotlight in a slow sweeping motion from the middle of the road to the appropriate side of the road (approximately a 90° sweep for each light). The driver also should keep an eye out for lagomorphs in or near the road while driving at about 10 to 12 mph. When a lagomorph is spotted (eyes shine pink in the spotlight), the researcher will notify the driver, who will then stop the vehicle and record the data. It is best to conduct the survey ± 3 days of the full moon. However, the weather must be appropriate as well. There are two roads that the survey is conducted on, one in a creosotebush habitat (route 1) and the other in a grassland habitat (route 3). Each route is about 6 miles long. For more detailed methods, see Rabbit_Survey_Protocol.pdf. This study is ongoing.
