Alternate Identifier:DOI PLACE HOLDER
Abstract:

This data package contains daily precipitation values from a rain gauge at the Biodiversity study site at the Jornada Basin LTER in southern New Mexico, USA. Data collection at the Biodiversity site began in 1996 and a tipping bucket rain gauge commenced data collection in April of that year. The data file included here reports daily precipitation totals in millimeters (mm). Data collection from this tipping bucket rain gauge is ongoing and collected on a monthly basis (data package may be updated less frequently).

Methods and Protocols

These methods, instrumentation and/or protocols apply to all data in this dataset:

Methods and protocols used in the collection of this data package
Description:

A Novalynx Corporation tipping bucket rain gauge (model 6011) has been used for the duration of this study. A Novalynx rain gauge pulse recorder (model 260-2107) recorded data from April 1996 until March 2005. Data were down loaded to a portable hand held data transfer unit, then transferred to computer. In March 2005 an Onset HOBO Event Logger replaced the Novalynx pulse recorder and recorded data until March 2016. From March 2016 onward a Campbell CR10X datalogger recorded data from the rain gauge.

A related data package on EDI (knb-lter-jrn.210121008) contains high resolution rain event data (all tips logged with a timestamp) from this precipitation gauge.

Biodiversity study site location

From the stone pillars at the south entrance of the Jornada Experimental Range (USDA), follow the road west approximately 4 miles to the first (wretched) gate on the right (north). Go through this gate approximately one quarter mile, parking spot is on west side of road under power lines. The Biodiversity site is on the right (east) side of the road across from the parking spot. The raingage is located about 5m south of Plot #46, which is due east of the parking spot, about 100m. The Biodiversity site is to the southeast of Summerford Mountain.
