Abstract:

This data package contains 30-minute soil volumetric water content (VWC) data collected at fifteen locations along 3 transects (5 locations per transect) in the Tromble Weir Watershed area of the Jornada Basin in southern New Mexico, USA. At each location, soil sensors measure VWC at three depths, 5, 15 and 30 cm, in units of cubic meters of water per cubic meter of soil. These measurements are used to help quantify the water balance across the small experimental watershed. Values have been used to investigate groundwater recharge, soil infiltration rates, and to evaluate the performance of hydrologic models. This is an ongoing dataset that will be updated annually.

Description:

General study design

The Tromble Weir Watershed is a small experimental watershed located in the East Bajada geomorphic unit of the Jornada Basin in southern New Mexico, USA. We have instrumented this watershed, which consists of a mixed Chihuahuan Desert shrubland, and have on-going measurements and modeling studies of hydrological, meteorological and phenological processes. The instrument network consists of 15 soil moisture profiles arranged along hillslope transects. A network of rain gauges and runoff flumes in channels and along hillsides are also deployed.

This data package contains soil volumetric water content (VWC) sensor data from fifteen locations in the Tromble Watershed. The fifteen locations are arranged in three transects (five soil sensor profiles per transect) and sensors collect VWC data at 5, 15, and 30 cm at each location.

Methods (QC and data preparation performed in MATLAB)

The original resolution of the data is 30 minutes and was maintained. Data was imported into MATLAB and arranged into the 45 columns of volumetric water content. For gap filling of data, the timeseries of raw data was synchronized with an already created 30-minute resolution timetable spanning the same Oct 2016 through Dec 2019 dates. The gaps in data between the two synchronized timetables are filled with NA. Erroneous values, VWC above 1 (as porosity cannot be greater than 100 percent), were removed and replaced with NA.
