Grasshopper survey data at the Jornada Basin LTER site, 1983 to 1985

General Information
Data Package:
Local Identifier:knb-lter-jrn.210370001.29
Title:Grasshopper survey data at the Jornada Basin LTER site, 1983 to 1985
Alternate Identifier:DOI PLACE HOLDER
Abstract:

This dataset contains grasshopper occurrence observations sampled from 9 plots on the east bajada of the Dona Ana Mountains at the Jornada Basin LTER site from 1983 to 1985. Three plots were situated on the bajada parallel to and 200 m south of the LTER-I transect. Two additional sets of three plots were located 5 km and 10 km south of the LTER transect. Each plot is composed of two 50 meter belt transects, each divided into ten 5-square-meter quadrats. Grasshoppers were visually sampled in each quadrat/plot, once in May, July and September, in 1983, 1984 and 1985. Each individual grasshopper, its age, sex and the substrate it was observed on, are recorded as observations in the dataset. This study is complete.

Methods and Protocols

These methods, instrumentation and/or protocols apply to all data in this dataset:

Methods and protocols used in the collection of this data package
Description:

Locations and data collection

Three plots were situated on the bajada of the Dona Ana mountains, parallel to and 200 m south of the LTER-I transect. Two additional sets of three plots were located 5 km and 10 km south of the LTER transect. Each plot is composed of two 50 meter belt transects, each divided into ten 5-square-meter quadrats. Grasshoppers were visually sampled in each quadrat/plot once in May, July and September, in 1983, 1984 and 1985. Each individual grasshopper, its age, sex and the substrate it was observed on, are recorded as observations in the dataset.

The protocol for observations was to enter each quadrat, search for grasshoppers, visually identify each grasshopper to species, estimate nymphal instars, record sex, and the substrate individuals are observed on (e.g. plant species if on vegetation, soil type if on ground).

Additional files

Two additional files are included with this dataset. The first - jgrashop.lst.txt - describes the codes for grasshopper species and vegetation observed in the data file. The other - jgrashop.dsd.txt - is a metadata text file from the earlier Jornada information management system and may contain useful metadata.

Abstract:

The Jornada Basin Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) program is part of a national network of long-term ecological research sites funded by the US National Science Foundation (NSF). The Jornada LTER program has been continuously funded since 1982 to develop general principles governing changes between grassland and shrubland ecosystems based on long-term data collected in the Chihuahuan Desert. We translate our findings to dryland ecosystems around the world, and forecast the dynamics of future ecosystem states in response to changing climate and land use.

At the time of this study, JRN LTER was funded by the National Science Foundation under award DEB 8114466 (LTER-I).
