Abstract:

This data package contains fluff grass (Erioneuron pulchellum) data from 1987. The purpose of this study was to test if changing densities of soil microarthropods and nematodes results in changes in fluff grass nitrogen mineralization and biomass. Twenty plots (each 6m x 6m) with 3-meter buffers between were established on the Jornada Basin CDRCC. Four treatments were assigned to 5 plots each 1) Chlordane (to exclude microarthropods), 2) Chlordane and water, 3) Water, and 4) Control. For four consecutive months, randomly selected fluff grass plants were collected from each plot and the flowers, green leaves, and grey leaves were separated for total nitrogen digestion analysis and dry weight. This data set consists of sampling date, treatment, plant matter, total nitrogen and dry weight. This study was complete in August 1987. Methods and protocols used in the collection of this data package
Description:

Twenty 6 x 6 m plots with a 3-meter buffer zone were established on the Jornada Basin CDRCC in 1986. Five plots each were randomly assigned to one of four treatments: (1) chlordane amendment (100ml Al (Active Ingredients) per 10,000 ml) to exclude microarthropods, (2) water (irrigation 6 mm per week), (3) water (6 mm per week) plus chlordane amendment (100 ml Al per 10,000 ml) and (4) control, no treatment. In May, June, July, and August of 1987, 3 fluffgrass plants from each plot were collected for total nitrogen analysis and dry weight measurements. Plant matter was separated as 1.) flowers, 2.) green leaves, and 3.) grey leaves. These parts were oven dried for 96 hours at 50 C, weighed, and ground in a Wiley Mill for total nitrogen analysis preparation using a micro Kjeldahl digestion and aluminum block. The analysis was performed using automated procedures on a Scientific Instruments Continuous Flow Analyzer.
