Abstract:

This data package contains fluff grass (_Dasyochloa pulchella_) data from 1987. The purpose of this study was to test if changing densities of soil microarthropods and nematodes results in changes in fluff grass nitrogen mineralization and growth. Twenty plots (each 6m x 6m) with 3-meter buffers between were established on the Jornada Basin CDRCC. Four treatments were assigned to 5 plots each 1) Chlordane (to exclude microarthropods), 2) Chlordane and water, 3) Water, and 4) Control. At monthly intervals, randomly selected fluff grass plants were collected from each plot. This data set consists plant diameters (cm), mite soil weight (g), root weight (g), nematode soil weight (g), root total nitrogen (mg/g), and nematode number. This study was complete in November 1987.

Methods and protocols used in the collection of this data package
Description:

Twenty 6 x 6 m plots with a 3-meter buffer zone were established on the Jornada Basin CDRCC in 1986. Five plots each were randomly assigned to one of four treatments: (1) chlordane amendment (100ml Al (Active Ingredients) per 10,000 ml) to exclude microarthropods, (2) water (irrigation 6 mm per week), (3) water (6 mm per week) plus chlordane amendment (100 ml Al per 10,000 ml) and (4) control, no treatment. During each month (January-November) randomly selected fluff grass plants from each plot were clipped at ground level and collected in a paper bag for height and diameter measurements. In addition, rhizosphere core samples (10 cm diameter, 15 cm depth) were taken for each plant collected. These samples were placed in a plastic bag, stored in a cooler, and transported to the lab. The first subsamples of roots were separated from soil using a 2 mm sieved and cleaned by hand, then oven dried at 50 C for 96 hours. Afterwards, the roots were weighed and ground up in a Wiley Mill for total nitrogen analyses. A micro Kjeldhal digestion was used to prepare samples using an aluminum block digestor. Nitrogen analyses were performed on the digest using automated procedures on a Scientific Instruments Continuous Flow Analyzer. The second rhizosphere subsamples were used for microarthropod and nematode extractions. Microarthropods were extracted in a modified Tullgren funnels into water (Santos et al. 1978), then counted and identified to species (Krantz 1978). After microarthropod extraction, the soil was sieved through a 2-mm screen mesh and roots were collected. On subsamples for nematode extraction, roots were carefully separated by hand, then nematodes were extracted by a modified sugar flotation technique (Freckman et al. 1977).
