Abstract:

This dataset contains multiple geospatial layers that describe soils in the Jornada Basin, and surrounding areas of southern New Mexico U.S.A. The data were derived from Soil Conservation Service surveys in 1918, 1968, and 1980, as well as other sources. Spatial information and attributes in this dataset reflect the published information for the study (Monger 2006) to the extent known, but the data are under review and should be considered provisional at this time. Dataset description

This dataset contains multiple geospatial layers that describe soils in the Jornada Basin, and surrounding areas of southern New Mexico U.S.A. The data were derived from Soil Conservation Service surveys in 1918, 1968, and 1980, as well as other sources. The Dona Ana county survey data was initially published by Bulloch and Neher (1980), with elements republished in 2006 by Monger. Further details can be found in the two publications referenced below.

Data for each layer are provided as ESRI shapefiles compressed and archived within individual ZIP files. Each shapefile is a multi-polygon layer that is mapped across the Jornada Basin and nearby areas, including the Jornada Experimental Range (JER) and the Chihuahuan Desert Rangeland Research Center (CDRRC). Metadata for each layer are provided within the QGIS metadata file (.qmd extesion) included in the ZIP archive. The attributes of each polygon layer describe the geological and soil units.

Spatial information and attributes in this dataset reflect the published information for the study (Monger 2006) to the extent known, but the data are under review and should be considered provisional at this time.

Abstract:

The Jornada Basin Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) program is part of a national network of long-term ecological research sites funded by the US National Science Foundation (NSF). The Jornada LTER program has been continuously funded since 1982 to develop general principles governing changes between grassland and shrubland ecosystems based on long-term data collected in the Chihuahuan Desert. We translate our findings to dryland ecosystems around the world, and forecast the dynamics of future ecosystem states in response to changing climate and land use.
