Abstract:

This dataset contains field-observed plot level phenology data for three perennial shrubs and one perennial grass at a bajada site at the Jornada Basin LTER site from 2010 to present. Shrubs include creosote (Larrea tridentata), honey mesquite (Prosopis glandulosa), and tarbush (Fluorensia). The grass is bush muhly grass (Muhlenbergia porteri). The protocols and phenophase categories were developed by the US National Phenology Network (US-NPN) to detect the different life-cycles of the plant, from leaf development (breaking leaf buds, young unfolded leaves, percentage of leaves in canopy), to flower development (flower buds, open flowers, full flowering), and presence of fruit (ripe fruits, fruits from past growing season). Field data sheets were modified from the US-NPN to record the presence or absence of each phenophase recorded at each observation period for each tagged plant. This dataset is complete.

Description:

Site description

These observations were made on three transects established at the Systems Ecology Lab’s Bajada site at the Jornada Basin LTER. For more information about the site see the Additional Information metadata.

Observations

Since March 2010, field phenology observations of 4 species were collected weekly from April to December and bi-weekly from the end of December to March along three transects. The northwest, and south transects, approximately 300 meters long include six sites each, spaced every 50 meters apart. Each site at the NW and S transect consists of three individually tagged plants with a total of 36 plants, except for tarbush which was not found in every site with a total of 24 plants. The east phenology transect (only one site), built along a tram system that measures hyperspectral vegetation indices, consists of 10 individually tagged plants for each of the species; creosote, tarbush, honey mesquite, and bush muhly. Each sampling day, a field crew member measures the presence or absence of the foliar growth and reproductive phenological cycles as described in the National Phenology Network protocol (see Denny et al 2012) for each plant and phenophase.

Abstract:

The Systems Ecology Lab Bajada site is jointly funded under the NSF CREST Program (Centers of Research Excellence in Science and Technology), with support from the Jornada Basin LTER program. The JRN LTER is part of a national network of long-term ecological research sites funded by the US National Science Foundation (NSF). The JRN LTER program has been continuously funded since 1982 to develop general principles governing changes between grassland and shrubland ecosystems based on ong-term data collected in the Chihuahuan Desert.

Funding:

The SEL Bajada site is supported by CREST: Cyber-ShARE Center of Excellence awards, Phase I (734825) and II (1242122), from the National Science Foundation. The Cyber-ShARE Center of Excellence is based at the University of Texas at El Paso. The JRN LTER program is funded by the National Science Foundation under award DEB 2025166 .
