Abstract:

The objective of this ongoing study is to investigate how abundance, distribution, and activity of mammals (>= 1 kg) vary across grassland to shrubland ecotones in the northern Chihuahuan Desert. This dataset includes animal occurrence data derived from camera trap images captured in 24 grassland-to-shrubland ecotone sites in the Jornada Basin, Dona Ana County, New Mexico, USA. The data set contains occurrence records from 14 mammal species with the date and time a species was detected. Also included are the number of individuals in a photo, operational dates and number of functional camera days for cameras, total number of trap nights a camera was active, and geographical coordinates of camera trap locations. Sampling is ongoing and occurs during the monsoon season from July-November. Sampling has occurred annually since 2014.

Methods and protocols used in the collection of this data package

Description:

Animal occurrence surveys began in 2014 by establishing 15 camera trap sites within five core pastures (3 sampling sites per pasture). The pastures were 5 to 10 km apart. Within each pasture, we selected sites representing three ecological states (grassland, ecotone, and shrubland). In 2015, we expanded our survey effort to include nine additional camera sites that also represented varying degrees of mesquite encroachment. Collectively, these 24 sites offered a wide range of grass cover (mean = 14.5%; range: 1.7–50.2%) and shrub cover (mean = 12.3%; range: 1.5–27.1%) and covered ~200 km2 of the Jornada LTER site. The minimum distance between camera sites varied from 188 to 4,400 m.

At each site we deployed two infrared remotely triggered cameras (Trophy Cam models, Bushnell) separated by 196 m (n = 48 camera traps at 24 sites). We affixed camera traps to fenceposts 0.5 m aboveground, and programmed cameras to take three photographs in a short burst with a 30-second delay before rearming. All camera sites are unbaited. Cameras are active from July through October or November each year.

The Jornada Basin Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) program is part of a national network of long-term ecological research sites funded by the US National Science Foundation (NSF). The Jornada LTER program has been continuously funded since 1982 to develop general principles governing changes between grassland and shrubland ecosystems based on long-term data collected in the Chihuahuan Desert. We translate our findings to dryland ecosystems around the world, and forecast the dynamics of future ecosystem states in response to changing climate and land use.
