Abstract:

This dataset contains water level data collected at 18 playas starting in June 2016 for a long-term study of playa inundation at the Jornada Basin LTER site in southern New Mexico, U.S.A. Instantaneous measurements of surface water level are made every 15 minutes by a pressure transducer located at the lowest point of each playa. This is an ongoing study and the dataset will be updated yearly.

Methods and protocols used in the collection of this data package
Description:

Data are offloaded from water level sensors at the 18 playas. An Onset U20L-04 HOBO water level sensor designed for depths shallower than 13 ft was installed in a dry stilling well at the lowest point in each playa to measure water depth above the surface. The water level sensor has a typical error of +/-0.4 cm and a maximum error of +/-0.8 cm. To correct for barometric pressure, an additional water level sensor was placed above-ground at Playa 21 so that it is never underwater. The instruments record instantaneous measurements every 15 minutes, and data offload occurs each year in March, June, and November.

Raw data (*.hobo files) are processed and exported as *.csv files using the HOBOware Pro software.

Data are loaded into MATLAB, and a threshold is applied to the water level data to quickly distinguish between potential flood and non-flood data and then reviewed manually. Quality flags are added after review of data and comparison to precipitation records to create Level 1 dataset. The precipitation data used was Multi-Radar/Multi-Sensor (MRMS) weather radar data for each playa’s contributing area. Water level data are deemed "Invalid" (I) if they show large or unrealistic spikes in water level not associated with precipitation events. Invalid data are commonly found around times before and after data is offloaded from the sensor. Data are deemed "Questionable" (Q) if there is high background noise and it is difficult to discern whether a peak indeed represents a rise in water level. The questionable data are associated with precipitation events and are considered as flood data for the final processing step of these data, which set non-flood data equal to zero, although they may not appear as obvious floods looking solely at the raw water level data. Data are deemed "Flood" (F) when there is a rapid rise in water level above the background noise that is associated with precipitation. Non-flood data are given no quality flag and are assumed to be equal to zero.

Non-flood data (Quality flag "I") are set to 0 to create Level 2 dataset with only flood values. "F" and "Q" flags are assumed to be floods. This filtered data is added to the table with the non-flood values equal to zero and the flood values equal to the water level for the given timestamp.

Abstract:

Dryland ecosystems occupy nearly half of the Earth's land surface and provide goods and services for more than 1 billion people. The goal of the Jornada Basin Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) program is to understand what factors determine the structure and function of drylands, and to develop general principles governing changes between grassland and shrubland ecosystems. This research is based on long-term data collected in the Chihuahuan Desert. We translate our findings to dryland ecosystems around the world, and forecast the dynamics of future ecosystem states in response to changing climate and land use.
