Abstract:

We surveyed naturally occurring tall goldenrod (Solidago altissima) plants in a long-term nitrogen addition field experiment at the Kellogg Biological Station's T7 untilled succession plots in the Main Cropping System Experiment (https://lter.kbs.msu.edu/research/long-term-experiments/main-cropping-system-experiment/). We collected data on the defensive stem nodding morph (which helps plants evade apex-galling herbivores) and presence of galls in 2016, 2021, and 2022.

Methods and protocols used in the collection of this data package
Description:

In 2021 and 2022, we marked 20 S. altissima stems per subplot by placing four evenly spaced 3 m transects across the plots, 1 m in from the edge, and then selecting the nearest S. altissima stem every 0.75 m, and surveyed these stems throughout the season for stem nodding, gall presence, and height. We also measured aboveground biomass (dry weight) in 2022. We also we collected preliminary data on nodding and galling frequencies in 1 m2 quadrats in these same plots on June 16, 2016
