Abstract:

Rates of community primary production and respiration can be calculated from the data presented here. For two sites on the north shore of Moorea, these measurements are sampled upstream and downstream: dissolved oxygen, water column velocity (speed and direction), in situ light (PAR) levels, incident solar radiation, temperature, wind speed, and transect length. Estimates are made yearly across approximately 160 m of the backreef community.

This material uses data collected by the U.S. National Science Foundation's (NSF) Moorea Coral Reef Long Term Ecological Research (MCR LTER) site under Grant No. OCE 2224354 (and earlier awards). Additional financial support to the MCR LTER site was provided through a generous gift from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation. Research was completed under permits issued by the French Polynesian Government (Délégation à la Recherche) and the Haut-commissariat de la République en Polynésie Francaise (DTRT) (Protocole d'Accueil 2005-2024).

Description:

Sampling

Community metabolism were determined over a period of up to 5-6 days during austral summer and winter (2 times per year) along transects at LTER sites 1 and 2 on the north shore of Moorea. Each transect consists of an upstream benthic instrument mooring approximately 5 m shoreward of the reef crest and a downstream benthic instrument mooring. Transect length is reported as a table column.

On Day 0, instruments are deployed at both upstream and downstream locations. Upstream instruments include a dissolved oxygen sensor (In Situ RDO, now Precision Instruments MINIDOTs), acoustic doppler profiler (ADP) (Nortek, Aquadopp).; downstream instruments include the aforementioned plus a scalar irradiance (PAR) sensor (Li-Cor 1400, 4 sensor). Sampling frequencies are: dissolved oxygen 0.02 Hz, velocity 25 Hz, and PAR 0.02 Hz. Instruments are retrieved on Day 5 or 6 and data are downloaded and time aligned. During some periods, sampling did not occur due to weather making study sites hazardous for personnel.

Rates of net community primary production (during the day) and community respiration (at night) are computed from changes in dissolved oxygen between the upstream and downstream locations and corrected for exchange across the air-sea interface. Both community primary production and community respiration can be calculated.
