Abstract:

Monthly averages of the Sea Surface Temperature (SST), the Sub-surface chlorophyll-a concentration (Chl), the colored dissolved and detrital organic materials at 443 nm (acdm[443]) and the particulate backscattering coefficient at 443 nm (bbp[443]) around Moorea are obtained or derived from satellite data (SST from AVHRR and MODIS-Aqua; Chl, acdm[443] and bbp[443] from SeaWiFS and MODIS-AQUA). The satellite data are averaged over a 1 month period for geographic areas of 16S-19S/147W-151W (SeaWiFS and MODIS-AQUA) and 15S-20S/145W-155W for AVHRR.

The Chlorophyll (Chl) data come from the NASA SeaWiFS and MODIS-AQUA Level-3 daily binned products. These are 4.5 km (MODIS-AQUA) or 9 km (SeaWiFS) resolution data for which the region of interest (16S-19S/147W-151W) is extracted. Islands and reef pixels are filtered out based on geographic location. Monthly data are composited from the daily values and averaged over the region of interest. Monthly anomalies are calculated by subtracting the monthly climatology calculated over the whole mission from the monthly data. The monthly percentage coverage of the region of interest is also calculated. This has been done for the whole SeaWiFS (Sept. 1997 - Dec. 2010) and MODIS-AQUA (July 2002 - Dec. 2010) time series.

These Chl data come from version R2010.0 for SeaWiFS (completed September 2010) and R2009.1 for MODIS-AQUA (completed April 2010).

Description:

Sub-Surface CDM absorption coefficient and particulate backscattering

The colored dissolved and detrital particulate matter absorption coefficient at 443 nm (CDM) and the particulate backscattering coefficient at 443 nm (BBP) are derived from the NASA SeaWiFS and MODIS-AQUA Level-3 binned reflectances (Rrs) using the GSM01 model (Maritorena et al., 2002). These are 4.5 km (CDM, BBP from MODIS-AQUA) or 9 km (CDM from SeaWiFS) resolution data for which the region of interest (16S-19S/147W-151W) is extracted. Islands and reef pixels are filtered out based on geographic location. Monthly data are composited from the daily values and averaged over the region of interest. Sea Surface Temperature from AVHRR

Nighttime SST data are extracted using the NASA PO.DAAC Ocean ESIP Tool (POET). The data are a 1 degree optimally interpolated SST data set based on the combination of AVHRR satellite Thermal Infra-red and in situ SST data. Monthly values are extracted for the region of interest (15S-20S/145W-155W) and averaged over that region. The SST time-series started in Dec. 1981.
