Abstract:

Conductivity and chloride were measured for 2 years in nine tributaries of Lake Mendota and Lake Monona in Dane County, WI. HOBO Conductivity loggers continuously measured absolute conductivity and water temperature every 30 minutes. Breaks in data collection were due to a calibration period or if the loggers were out of the water. Grab samples for chloride concentration occurred weekly or biweekly. Conductivity and water temperature were measured with a field meter at each sampling excursion. This data was needed for a master’s research thesis with the goal of characterizing the spatial distribution and loading of chloride in the Upper Yahara River Watershed.

Description:

Field measurements and lab analyses

Conductivity

In-situ HOBO conductivity loggers were used to continuously monitor absolute conductivity (μS cm-1) and temperature (℃) every 30 minutes at each stream location over the entire study period. Before the initial deployment, all loggers were calibrated using a 2-point calibration method. A period of missing data (October 22-30, 2020) was due to a second calibration. The loggers were routinely collected to download the data, clean the sensors, and ensure accurate collection. PVC housing was built and used to protect each logger and was developed in consultation with the logger manufacturer’s guidelines. The method of securing the logger at each location varied based on site specifics. Locations of the loggers were carefully chosen to measure stream water that was well mixed and flowing. Additionally, loggers were co-located with USGS gaging wherever possible.

A handheld Thermo Scientific conductivity meter was used to measure absolute conductivity in µS cm-1 and temperature in ℃ at every sampling event. These values were used to validate the in-situ sensor measurements and mitigate any sensor drift. The handheld meter was calibrated prior to every use using KCl of 100 μS cm-1 at 25℃ and 500 μS cm-1 at 25℃.

Chloride

Weekly grab samples were collected from each of the nine stream locations from December 17, 2019 through March 16, 2020 and November 24, 2020 through April 10, 2021. More frequent sampling was conducted mainly in the winter and spring to ensure representative chloride concentrations over a range of flow conditions. Biweekly samples were collected throughout the remainder of the year to gain an understanding of chloride's year-round impact in the UYRW. WIC was added as a sampling location during the summer of 2020.

At each sampling event, 30-60 mL of water was collected, filtered through a 25 mm, 0.45μm pore size filter, and refrigerated for storage until laboratory analysis could occur. Ion chromatography was used to analyze each water sample for chloride (mg L-1). A Dionex 2100 ion chromatograph equipped with IonPac AS11 analytical column was calibrated with six NaCl solutions ranging from 1 mg L-1 to 500 mg L-1 and run with a 30 mM NaOH eluent solution.

Data Analysis

Continuous logger data

The absolute conductivity data from the HOBO loggers were converted to specific conductivity at 25 degrees celsius using the full range conductivity and water temperature. The function used to convert absolute conductivity to specific conductivity is included in the data_prep.R file.

Conductivity that was measured while the HOBO loggers were outside of the water or frozen in ice were removed from the specific conductivity conversion and are reported as NA in the SpCond_uScm column. Original low range and high range absolute conductivity measurements were left as collected.

Grab sampling data

The absolute conductivity data from the grab sampling were converted to specific conductivity at 25 degrees celsius using the conductivity and water temperature. The function used to convert absolute conductivity to specific conductivity is included in the data_prep.R file.
