Methods and protocols used in the collection of this data package
Description:

For simulating Lake Mendota, a coupled 1D vertical hydrodynamic-ecological model GLM-AED2 (GLM: v.3.1.0a1, AED2: 1.3.4, developed by University of Western Australia) was used. The water quality module, AED2, was configured to simulate the dynamics of dissolved oxygen, silica, inorganic carbon, organic matter (refractory, particulate and dissolved C, N and P), inorganic matter (refractory, particulate and dissolved C, N and P) as well as PO4, NO3, and NH4, and two functional phytoplankton groups (representing diatoms and cyanobacteria). The model was run on an hourly time step and output data were saved at a daily timestep on noon. The thickness of each model layer (set to a maximum of 75 layers) could vary between 0.15 and 1.5 m with a minimum layer volume of 0.1 m3. Inflow data includes daily values of discharge, salinity, water temperature, phosphate concentrations, adsorbed phosphate concentrations, dissolved organic phosphorus concentrations, particulate organic phosphorus concentrations, dissolved organic nitrogen concentrations, ammonium concentrations, nitrate concentrations, refractory dissolved organic carbon concentrations, pH values, and silica concentrations. Meteorological data includes hourly values of short-wave radiation, long-wave radiation, air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed, rainfall, and snowfall.
