Title:Biogeochemistry data set for Imnavait Creek Weir on the North Slope of Alaska 2002-2018
Alternate Identifier:DOI PLACE HOLDER
Abstract:

Data file containing biogeochemical data of water samples collected in Imnavait Creek, North Slope of Alaska. Sample site descriptors include a unique assigned number (sortchem), site, date, time, depth, distance (downstream), and elevation. Values of variables measured in the field include temperature, conductivity, pH. Chemical analysis for samples include alkalinity, dissolved organic carbon (DOC), inorganic and total dissolved nutrients particulate carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus, cations and anions.

Definition:A unique number assigned to each sample collected at a specific site at a specific date and time. The year that the sample was collected is followed by a dash and then a sequential number. For example, if 600 samples were collected in 2002, then the first sample collected is 2002-0001 and the last sample is 2002-0600.Site Name. If a soil site, the site is described in the name by general location then specific feature (e.g., watertrack) then specific sampling point (1,2,3,...). Lake and stream sites use common names (e.g., Toolik) or LTER number codes. Exceptions in naming procedure are provided in the Code Information and in the AK-LTER_Site_Info.xls file.Sampling DateSampling Time in Alaska Daylight Savings Time (1 hour ahead of Alaska Standard Time: if 13:00 DST than 12:00 AST)Depth from surface of lake, stream, or soil, or a description of location such as "meta" for metalimnion.Distance along a stream where negative values are upstream of a designated starting point and positive values are downstream of the designated starting point. Methods and Protocols

These methods, instrumentation and/or protocols apply to all data in this dataset:

Methods and protocols used in the collection of this data package
Description:

Detailed water sampling protocols and chemical analyses are found in the Arctic LTER Land-Water group protocol book accessible from the Land-Water mainpage on the Arctic LTER web page or at http://www-personal.umich.edu/~gwk and clicking on the "Lab Protocol Manual" link toward the bottom of the page. Specific methodologies are described in the protocol book listed above, and a general description is provided below.
General analyses:
Water temperature, pH, conductivity, and dissolved gases are measured in the field on whole water (not filtered) from soils, streams, ponds, and lakes. Water for other analyses is filtered in the field and kept cold and dark or preserved until analysis. Dissolved inorganic nutrients (NH4 and PO4) were analyzed by wet chemistry methods at Toolik Field Station usually within 24 hours of sampling. Dissolved gases CO2 and CH4 were determined using a syringe equilibration method and analyzed at Toolik Field Station on a gas chromatograph. DOC, TDN, TDP, particulate C, N, and P, and dissolved ions were brought back to the University of Michigan for analysis. DOC and TDN are analyzed by high-temperature combustion on a Shimadzu instrument (TOC-V or equivalent), or TDN is analyzed by persulfate digestion. Particulate Carbon and Nitrogen are analyzed on a Perkin Elmer CHN 2400 (or equivalent). TDP and NO3 are analyzed on an OI Alpkem autoanalyzer, anions on a Dionex ion chromatograph, and cations on an inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometer (ICP-OES Perkin Elmer Optima 4300 or 8000). Alkalinity samples were analyzed potentiometrically on a Radiometer autotitrator.
For all analyses, sample values that were less than zero were assigned a value of zero. See specific protocols for limits of detection. Missing values (not sampled or analyzed) are represented by a period " . " in the dataset.
