Abstract:

Niwot Ridge climate records indicate a trend of warmer spring and summer temperatures and earlier timing of snowmelt. In alpine tundra plant communities where snow cover limits growing season length, the current climatic trend is conducive to a longer growing season. The snowbed experiment was established in order to monitor changes in plant cover and community composition in the alpine tundra in response to extended summer growing season conditions. Of particular interest are late-melting snowbed areas where plant colonization and survival are most restricted or entirely prevented by a limited number of snow-free days with the sunlight and temperature necessary for plant establishment and growth.

In 2012, fifteen 1 x 1 m plots were established at 5 sites where there are persistent, late-melting snowbeds. Plots were placed along (1) an elevation gradient and (2) a snow-cover gradient from persistent snowbeds, where snowpack is greatest and melt-out dates latest in the season, to wind-scoured dry meadows, where snow pack is least and melt-out dates earliest. In 2015 the one site was dropped from the experiment because the snowbed there was quite different from the other four.

Description:

Naming Convention

The original five snowbed experiment sites were Arikaree, D1, Martinelli, Soddie and Ridges. Ridges was dropped in 2015. Each plot is named with an alpha numeric code that indicates the site and positions along the elevation and snow cover gradients.

Site: A = Arikaree, D = D1, M = Martinelli, S = Soddie, R = Ridges

Elevation: A to D, where A is the highest in elevation and D is the lowest

Snow Cover: 1 to 5. Often, 1 is in the latest melting snow end of the spectrum and 5 in the earliest. However, due to patchy snowbed melt-out dynamics at many of the sites, the 1 to 5 designation is not always indicative of snow melt timing.

Example: Plot AD3 is the third plot at the lowest elevation at the Arikaree site.

Species Composition

Plant species composition in each plot is measured annually at peak biomass using a point-intercept method within a 100-point grid. Using a metal flag at each of the 100 grid points, the uppermost plant intercepted is recorded as being hit. Plants that are found present in the plot without being hit are given a hit value of 0.5. Non-plant hits may include bare soil surface or small gravely rock (bare), lichen growing on soil (lichen), and rock or rock fragments at least 10 cm in diameter or generally large enough to prevent plant growth at that point (rock). Lichen growing on rock is counted as ‘rock.’ Moss and lichen are recorded only if hit; presence alone is not recorded. Litter is dead plant material that was never alive during the current growing season. Litter hits have been recorded somewhat differently throughout the experiment. Specific methods details were not recorded in 2012-13. In 2014, a hit was counted as litter if plant litter was the uppermost hit at a point. However, due to concern that this method was not exactly that used in 2012-13 and that it may lead to an overestimate of unvegetated area within a plot, the method was modified. In 2015 and subsequent years, when litter was the uppermost hit at a point but live plant material was intercepted lower down, the hit was recorded as the live species. Plot D3 at site D1 was not surveyed in 2016 and no species composition surveys took place in 2020 or 2022.

Hobos

Starting in 2015, we put HOBO light and temperature sensor data loggers (OnSet, HOBO Pendant, UA-002-08) out next to snowbed plots near the end of the summer field season every year and collected them the following summer after snowmelt. The purpose of these loggers was to capture the timing of snowmelt at each plot; HOBOs are not shielded and do not accurately reflect surface temperatures in sunlight. HOBOs were placed on the ground and anchored with a landscape staple just uphill, about 5 cm, of each plot. Starting in 2022, hobos at the D1 site were deployed under rocks to prevent displacement, so light values from this site do not reflect snowcover. In addition to HOBOs placed at snowbed sites surveyed for species composition, an additional set of HOBOs was deployed from 2015-2021 in 15 saddle grid vegetation plots that are roughly comparable to snowbed plots, to facilitate intercomparisons in vegetation and snowmelt timing.
