Title:Plant species composition in black sand extended growing season experiment, 2018 - ongoing.
Alternate Identifier:DOI PLACE HOLDER
Abstract:

As a result of climate change, the Rocky Mountain Front Range is experiencing warmer summers and earlier snowmelt. Due to the importance of snow for regulating soil temperature, growing season length, and available moisture in alpine ecosystems, even small shifts in the snow-free period could have large impacts. The focus of the Black Sand Extended Growing Season Length Experiment is to examine how terrain-related differences in climate exposure influence the way alpine habitats respond to climate change via earlier snowmelt. To simulate how climate exposure may affect plant communities, NWT LTER researchers established 5 experimental sites each containing a pair 10 x 40m rectangular plots. These sites include north and south facing aspects, subalpine and alpine tundra meadows in a range of hydrological conditions (e.g. dry meadows, moist meadows, wet meadows). We accelerated snowmelt in one plot of each block by adding chemically inert black sand, while keeping the second plot as an unmanipulated control; black sand was added to these plots after snow had naturally melted. This dataset includes measurements of plant species composition.

Methods and protocols used in the collection of this data package
Description:

The Black Sand Extended Growing Season Length Experiment consists of five sites on Niwot Ridge, each with a pair of 10 x 40 m plots. Snowmelt was accelerated in one plot at each site by spreading 567g m^-2 of chemically inert black sand on the snow surface in the spring. The second plot at each site was kept as an unmanipulated snowmelt control to which the same amount of black sand was added after ambient snow melt in the summer.

In 2018, black sand was applied to the early snowmelt plots at: East Knoll, Audubon and Lefty = May 7, 2018. Soddie and Trough = May 8, 2018. Black sand was applied to all control plots on July 16, 2018.

In 2019, black sand was applied to the early snowmelt plots at: East Knoll and Soddie May 23, 2019; Audubon, Lefty and Trough June 3, 2019. Black sand was applied to control plots at: East Knoll, Lefty and Trough on August 19, 2019; Audubon and Soddie on August 21, 2019.

In 2020, black sand was applied to the early snowmelt plots at: East Knoll on May 12, 2020; Audubon, Lefty, Soddie and Trough on May 18, 2020. Black sand was applied to control plots at: East Knoll on August 3, 2020; Audubon and Lefty on August 17, 2020; Soddie on August 22, 2020; Trough on August 22-23, 2020.

In 2021, black sand was applied to the early snowmelt plots at: Audubon, East Knoll, Lefty and Soddie on May 4, 2021; Trough on May 6, 2021. Black sand was applied to control plots at: East Knoll on June 30, 2021; Lefty on June 30 and July 15, 2021; Soddie on July 8, 2021; Audubon and Trough on July 15, 2021.

To monitor changes in plant species composition resulting from accelerated snowmelt, we established three vegetation sampling protocols. First, to capture changes in plant species composition across community types, we established two permanent 40m transects in each plot and used point-intercept methods to sample species composition at 20cm intervals along the transect. Second, to capture changes in species composition within community types, we established 8 permanent 1m x 0.5m subplots in each plot using a quadrat with a 10cm x 10cm interior string grid to sample species composition at 50 interior grid points using point-intercept methods. Third, to capture changes in species richness at the plot level, we conducted timed surveys (45 person-minutes) of species richness in each plot. A more detailed description of these methods is included in the Black Sand Extended Growing Season Length Experiment protocols document.

Maintenance

Description:Appended 2019 data [no whole plot richness taken in 2019]; aligned species codes for 2018 to 2019 nomenclature in subplot and transect tables; set missing values to NaN or P; updated x and y coordinates in 2018 to reflect actual locations on point quadrat; added year variable, removed notes on unknowns. [SCE and JGS 17 April 2020] Updates to unknown species in 2018-2019 data that were identified in subsequent years (mostly Poas and Carexes); resolved some taxonomic inconsistencies (primarily Solidago multiradiata vs. simplex and Juncus drummondii vs. parryi that were confirmed in following years); updated codes to the official 6 letter ’NWT_code’ list, which follow names used Ackerfield’s Flora of Colorado and Wingate’s Sedges of Colorado; appended 2020 data; added krummholz and woody species demography tables; updated methods to reflect sampling details in each year. [JGS , JH and SCE 11 May 2021] QC'd all years of subplot and transect data to resolve taxonomic inconsistencies across years and data entry errors. Added column indicating experiment. Appended subplot and transect data through 2021. [JGS 27 Jan 2022]. Appended subplot data through 2022 and corrected a few taxonomic misidentifications in years 2018-2021. [JGS 17 Feb 2023] Updated subplot data file after discovering a non-finalized version of 2022 had been appended during the February 2023 update; added QUDT unit annotations license and RORid to metadata. [JGS/SCE 24 July 2023]
