Abstract:
Climatological data were collected from a Niwot Ridge climate station (D1) throughout the year. From July 5 2000 through October 23 2013, data were recorded using a Campbell Instruments CR23X data logger. Subsequently, data were recorded using a Campbell Instruments CR1000 data logger. Maximum and minimum values are recorded instantaneously, with a sampling interval of 5 seconds. Daily averages and totals were calculated from 17,280 individual measurements. This instrument was programmed to generate both hourly and daily output. Beginning in June 25 2009, 10 minute output was also generated. Daily output generated by the logger ended in 2014.

Methods and protocols used in the collection of this data package
Description:

The raw data files are archived in /data2/Datman/Rawarchive/Cr23x and the information from the web documentation form prior to 2010 was incorporated into /data2/Datman/Rawarchive/Cr23x/D1CR23X.TXT. A copy of the raw file was then processed to separate the hourly and 10 minute from the daily records, with the hourly records archived in /data1/Datman/Climdata/Cr23x/Hourly/Archive and the 10 minute records archived in /data1/Datman/Climdata/Cr23x/10_minute/Arc. A copy of the resulting daily data files was provided to the climatologist for quality checking. The information provided by the climatologist was then entered into the web documentation form and then appended the D1CR23X.TXT file, as were details of any modifications made to the processed daily files as a result of comments provided regarding quality. It is these modified, processed files that were the sources for the data in this file. Neither the raw files nor the processed hourly and 10 minute files were edited, however. Those consulting the hourly or 10 minute data in /data1/Datman/Climdata/Cr23x/Hourly/Archive or /data1/Datman/Climdata/Cr23x/10_minute/Archive should be aware of this and should consult the /data2/Datman/Rawarchive/Cr23x/D1CR23X.TXT file to determine the appropriateness of using particular hourly or 10 minute data. The hourly outputs are based on the 5 second sample intervals, with 720 individual values.

From 2010 onward, the climatologist provided an approximately yearly document to the data manager containing information for QAQC that was incorporated into data files for posting on the website. Raw data are archived in the appropriate subdirectory on the server:

Description:The documentation section of this file was developed from the NWT LTER Cr21x data files metadata, as well as personal communication with Mark Losleben. The data file was put under sccs control on 2 December 2002.[TMA 02 December 2002] Data for 2002 were appended on 1 December 2004. [TMA 01 December 2004] Data for 2003 and 2004 were appended.[06 January 2005] Data for 2005 and 2006 were appended.[TMA 05 February 2008] Data for 1 January 2007 through 7 September 2008 were appended to the data section.[TMA 9 February 2009] Data for the remainder of 2008 and 2009-2010 were appended to the data section. QAQC corrections were applied to all data. Five new solar radiation variables were added. Methods were edited to reflect addition of 10 minute data to the archive.[HCH 8 March 2011] Labels were shortened and definitions added.[HCH 21 August 2015] Labels were edited again to reflect new standards and variables were reordered. Data for 2011 to 2013 were appended. Methods and abstract were edited to reflect current QAQC procedures and change to cr1000 data logger.[HCH 16 October 2015] Data for 2014 were appended. All “time of” variables were removed except time of max wind speed. Max and min variables for solar radiation, soil temp, and vol water content were also removed for consistency with 10 minute variables from which daily data were calculated starting 10 September 2014.[HCH 19 January 2016] Temperature units changed to celsius.[HCH 27 April 2017] Column names and definitions updated to match recent data, percentperHundred unit changed to decimalFraction, new EML generated for EDI.
