Title:Biomass of Spartina alterniflora collected in July 2018 from various marsh edges around Plum Island Sound, MA, PIE LTER.
Alternate Identifier:DOI PLACE HOLDER
Abstract:

Biomass of Spartina alterniflora was collected at various locations within the Plum Island  Sound estuary. Samples were collected during July 2018. Only Spartina alterniflora was collected. To collect biomass, 25 X 25 cm quadrats were placed over the plants. Aboveground biomass was clipped to soil surface. Biomass was dried in the lab in a drying oven until a constant weight was reached, and then weighed. Biomass values were then convertedto grams of dry weight per square meter (g/m2).

Biomass was dried in the lab in a drying oven until a constant weight was reached, and then weighed. Biomass values were then converted to grams of dry weight per square meter (g/m2).
Sampling locations were recorded using a Geneq SXBlue II+ GPS Receiver. Elevation data was obtained from the PIE LTER 2005 Digital elevation model for the Plum Island Sound estuary, Massachusetts.
Data processing:
Plant data and gps locations were first entered into ArcGIS, and eventually transferred to  the PIE Excel metadata and data  file for uploading to the PIE web site and EDI Data Portal.

Abstract:

The Plum Island Ecosystems (PIE) LTER is developing a predictive understanding of the response of a linked watershed-marsh-estuarine system in northeastern Massachusetts to rapid environmental change. Over the last 30 years, surface sea water temperatures in the adjacent Gulf of Maine have risen at 3 times the global average, rates of sea-level rise have accelerated, and precipitation has increased. Coupled with these changes in climate and sea level are substantial changes within the rapidly urbanizing watersheds that influence water, sediment, and nutrient delivery to the marsh and estuary. In PIE IV our focus is on: Dynamics of coastal ecosystems in a region of rapid climate change, sea-level rise, and human impacts.
