SBC LTER: Reef: Long-term experiment: Kelp removal: Cover of bottom substrate and sand depth

General Information

Title:SBC LTER: Reef: Long-term experiment: Kelp removal: Cover of bottom substrate and sand depth
Alternate Identifier:DOI PLACE HOLDER
Abstract:

These data describe the cover of bottom substrate types and the sand depth (if the point was covered by the sand) as determined by a uniform point contact method. The presence of 8 substrate types are recorded at 80 uniformly spaced points along permanent 40m x 2m transects. Percent cover of a given substrate on transect can be estimated from UPC observations as the fraction of total points at which that substrate was present x 100. The percent cover of substrate at a location cannot exceed 100%.

The kelp removal experiment was initiated in 2008 at selected reef sites along the mainland coast of the Santa Barbara Channel. The following three giant kelp manipulations are maintained in sampling plots at each site:

- Control: Macrocystis pyriferais left intact during the experiment.

- Annual removal: Macrocystis pyriferais removed from an adjacent plot once each winter and allowed to re-colonize over the course of the year.

- Continuous removal: Macrocystis pyriferais removed from the plot on each sampling date.

The two tables in this data package include: 1) The percent cover of bottom substrate; and 2) the sand depth if the substrate is sand. See protocol for more information.

Methods and Protocols

These methods, instrumentation and/or protocols apply to all data in this dataset:

Methods and protocols used in the collection of this data package
Description:

Bottom substrate cover and sand depth data are collected using Uniform Point Contact (UPC) sampling method. UPC data are collected at 80 points uniformly positioned within a 1 m wide area centered along a permanent 40 m transect.

Percent cover values were given a NA (-99999) if: (1) data were not collected for a particular species or (2) a datasheet was lost

The kelp removal was terminated in 2016 and 2017. The vegetation survey is still ongoing to monitor the kelp recovery in the post-treatment condition. Refer to the protocol for details.

Abstract:

The primary research objective of the Santa Barbara Coastal LTER is to investigate the importance of land and ocean processes in structuring giant kelp (Macrocystis pyrifera ) forest ecosystems. As in many temperate regions, the shallow rocky reefs in the Santa Barbara Channel, California, are dominated by giant kelp forests. Because of their close proximity to shore, kelp forests are influenced by physical and biological processes occurring on land as well as in the open ocean. SBC LTER research focuses on measuring and modeling the patterns, transport, and processing of material constituents (e.g., nutrients, carbon, sediment, organisms, and pollutants) from terrestrial watersheds and the coastal ocean to these reefs. Specifically, we are examining the effects of these material inputs on the primary production of kelp, and the population dynamics, community structure, and trophic interactions of kelp forest ecosystems.
