Abstract:

The Bureau of Reclamation’s (Reclamation) Central Valley Project (CVP) delivers up to over three million acre-feet of water annually for agricultural, municipal, industrial, and environmental needs in California from the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta (Delta) through the C.W. “Bill” Jones Pumping Plant (JPP; Figure 1). A Reclamation operated fish salvage facility, the Tracy Fish Collection Facility (TFCF), is located upstream of the JPP and functions to salvage fish entrained in exported water (Bates and Vinsonhaler 1957). Additionally, the John E. Skinner Delta Fish Protective Facility (SDFPF) added by the department of water resources in 1968 to salvage fishes diverted by the State water Project (SWP). Salvage process involves fish collection, counting, handling and transportation back to Delta. To prevent fish loss, a fish facility was constructed at Old river, where fish were diverted to the fish facility for counting and reporting. Currently, after counting, the fish are collected in storage tanks and taken to several release locations in the Delta via fish-haul tank trucks. Around 19,024,323 fishes from 31 species were salvaged through this process from 1993-2021 by the two fish facilities. The top five species salvaged by both the facilities in 2021 were Threadfin Shad (31%), Bluegill (25%), Largemouth Bass (6%), Inland Silverside (6%), and Striped Bass (5%). Fishes listed (ESA or CESA) or fish species salvaged under special study salvaged from 1993-2021 were Chinook Salmon [1,122,436 (76%)], Delta Smelt [201,408 (14%)], steelhead trout [110,720 (7%)], Longfin Smelt [41,173 (3%)], and Green Sturgeon [654 (0.04%)] respectively (Fig.2). There are 5 comma-separated values (csv) files with all variables required for salvage calculations and each individual file for total salvage by month, year, and species from 1993-2021.

Methods and protocols used in the collection of this data package
Description:

Salvage reporting is required by contract with the California Department of Water Resources and the United States Bureau of Reclamation to export water and report to stakeholders such as the Smelt Monitoring Team and the Salmon Monitoring Team for near real time management of listed species. Both facilities use louver-bypass systems to divert fish from the exported water. The salvaged fish are periodically loaded into tanker trucks and transported to fixed release sites in the western Delta. Export and salvage operations began in 1957 at the TFCF and in 1968 at the SDFPF. The salvage database consists of 4 major components: the original data sheets, the master Access salvage database (main database) that contains all salvage data from January 1st, 1993, to the present (or copies of this database), dBase and Access salvage files files containing summary salvage information prior to 1993, and other database products. Data entry accuracy is checked by comparing listings of entered data against the data sheet entries twice immediately after their entry into the local database. Project environmental scientists perform reasonability checks by running computer queries that flag outliers or erroneous entries.
