Title:The Bear Brook Watershed in Maine, USA: Long-term soil temperature 2001 - 2016
Alternate Identifier:DOI PLACE HOLDER
Abstract:

This dataset includes 15-year soil temperature records for the Bear Brook Watershed in Maine (BBWM). Onset HOBO™️ data loggers were installed in the hardwood as well as softwood stands of the two watersheds, and air and soil temperatures were recorded from 2001 to 2016. Soil temperature data are available for the organic horizon and for 10 and 25 cm depths in the mineral horizon, at a three-hour timestep.

Methods and protocols used in the collection of this data package
Description:

Air and soil temperature were measured from 2001 to 2015 at three soil depths -- surface (organic soil), and 10 and 25 cm in the mineral soil, in both watersheds, and in both the hardwood and softwood forest types. Temperature measurements were recorded every three hours using Onset HOBO sensors (Onset Computer Corporation, Bourne, MA, USA). Soil moisture measurements are available from 2003 to 2016. Soil moisture was recorded every three hours at 10 and 25 cm depths using HOBO™️ Micro Station data loggers equipped with 10HS Smart Sensors (Onset Computer Corporation, Bourne, MA, USA). Additional processing details can be found in Fernandez et al. 2007 (https://digitalcommons.library.umaine.edu/aes_techbulletin/1/) and Patel et al. 2018 (DOI: 10.1038/sdata.2018.153).

Sampling Site:
Description:BBWM is located in eastern Maine, USA at an elevation of 450.8 m. Soils are coarse-loamy, mixed, frigid Typic and Aquic Haplorthods. Bedrock consists dominantly of quartzite, phyllite, and calc-silicate low-grade metasediments, and minor granite dikes. The lower elevations are dominated by hardwood stands, and the upper elevations are dominated by softwood stands. The site is located in the Acadian Plains and Hills (82) Level III Ecoregion (Omernik et al. https://www.epa.gov/eco-research/ecoregions).
