  • These data depict change in the northern hardwood forest at mid-elevation (360-680 m a.s.l.) over 40 years from 1981 – 2021. The data set includes 7443 trees over time. During this period, there was no trend in basal area or biomass, but there was a decrease in tree density and diversity and an increase in quadratic mean diameter.

    These data were gathered as part of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (HBES). The HBES is a collaborative effort at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, which is operated and maintained by the USDA Forest Service, Northern Research Station.
