Abstract:

These data depict change in the northern hardwood forest at mid-elevation (360-680 m a.s.l.) over 40 years from 1981 – 2021. The data set includes 7443 trees over time. During this period, there was no trend in basal area or biomass, but there was a decrease in tree density and diversity and an increase in quadratic mean diameter.

These data were gathered as part of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (HBES). The HBES is a collaborative effort at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, which is operated and maintained by the USDA Forest Service, Northern Research Station.

Methods and protocols used in the collection of this data package

Description:

In 1981, four transects were established 200m apart and running E to W. These plots were originally designed to characterize the habitat for intensive surveys of breeding birds in the HBEF (Siccama et al. 2007); they capture a community level picture of mid-elevation (360-680 m a.s.l.) tree composition, structure and dynamics and are located immediately to the west of the intensive gaged watersheds (WS1-6) on the south-facing slope of the HBEF. The tree survey encompasses 397 plots that are 25 by 10m and provide a systematic sample of a 400 ha landscape typical of the mid-elevations of the HBEF. All live trees ≥ 10 cm diameter at breast height (1.37 m, DBH) in the plots were measured to the nearest 0.1 cm DBH and identified to species. The trees were re-measured every ten years in 1991, 2001, 2011 and 2021. This data set was used to calculate basal area, biomass, tree density and diversity and quadratic mean diameter.
