Title:Spatiotemporal variation in internal phosphorus loading, sediment characteristics, water column chemistry, and thermal mixing in a hypereutrophic reservoir in southwest Iowa, USA (2019-2020)
Alternate Identifier:DOI PLACE HOLDER
Abstract:

The primary aim of the data product is to quantify seasonal and spatial variation in sediment phosphorus fluxes in a temperate reservoir and evaluate mechanisms responsible for instances of elevated sediment phosphorus release. We studied Green Valley Lake, a hypereutrophic reservoir in southwest Iowa, USA, from 2019 to 2020. We measured sediment phosphorus flux rates and potential explanatory variables at three sites along the longitudinal gradient of the reservoir over six sampling events during winter and summer stratification as well as mixing events in the spring, summer, and fall. Ex situ sediment core incubations were used to measure sediment P release rates under ambient temperature and dissolved oxygen conditions. Explanatory variables measured included sediment phosphorus chemistry, sediment physical characteristics, epilimnetic and hypolimnetic nutrient concentrations, and thermal stratification patterns. These data will be used to identify mechanisms driving hot spots and hot moments of sediment phosphorus release, which will contribute to our understanding of how areas of lakebed and times of the year can disproportionately influence whole-lake water chemistry.

Methods and Protocols

These methods, instrumentation and/or protocols apply to all data in this dataset:

Methods and protocols used in the collection of this data package
Description:

SEDIMENT P FLUXES: Field sampling: We collected intact sediment cores from the sampling sites across GVL in July of 2019 and approximately every other month from February to October of 2020. For each sampling event, three replicate sediment cores were collected at each sampling site using a gravity corer (inner diameter 5 cm). The intact sediment cores and the overlying water were sealed in acrylic core sleeves and transported at 4°C. During sampling, vertical profiles of temperature and dissolved oxygen were taken using a YSI ProDSS multiparameter sonde. A sample of hypolimnetic water was also collected and stored in a sealed carboy at 4°C to serve as replacement water for the core incubations.

Instrument(s):YSI ProDSS Multiparameter Digital Water Quality Meter with 6900 - ProDSS ODO Optical Dissolved Oxygen Sensor and 6902 - ProDSS Conductivity and Temperature Sensor.
Description:

SEDIMENT P FLUXES: Core incubation set-up: Back in the laboratory, the cores were exposed to temperature and dissolved oxygen treatments corresponding to conditions at each site at the time of sampling. Temperature treatments were achieved by securing the cores in either a water bath or an incubation chamber. Dissolved oxygen levels were manipulated by bubbling either air mixtures or N2 through the water overlying the sediment core. A slow, consistent bubble rate (~1 psi) was used to gently mix the water column without disturbing the sediment surface. After the cores have been installed in the ex situ incubation system, the total height of the water column within each core tube was measured and recorded. A known water volume needed to interpret how the P load in the water column changes over the incubation.

Description:

SEDIMENT P FLUXES: Core incubation sampling: Samples of the overlying water were collected 12, 36, 60, and 84 hours after the initial incubation set-up. For each daily sampling, 50 mL of water was removed for analysis of TP. An equivalent volume of hypolimnetic water from the corresponding sampling site was used to replace the water sampled. A sample of the replacement hypolimnetic water was also analyzed for TP daily to account for changes in water column P due to sampling and sample water replacement. Samples were preserved with 100 µL concentrated sulfuric acid per 50 mL sample, digested, and analyzed in duplicate for TP using a molybdenum blue method on a Seal Analytical AQ2 Discrete Analyzer. A YSI ProDSS Multiparameter sonde was used to sample water column temperature, dissolved oxygen, and pH daily.

Instrument(s):Seal Analytical AQ2 Discrete Analyzer YSI ProDSS Multiparameter Digital Water Quality Meter with 6900 - ProDSS ODO Optical Dissolved Oxygen Sensor, 6902 - ProDSS Conductivity and Temperature Sensor, and 6903 - ProDSS pH Sensor
Description:

SEDIMENT CHARACTERISTICS: Field sampling: We collected sediment cores from the sampling sites across GVL in July of 2019 (sediment physical characteristics only) and approximately every other month from February to October of 2020. A gravity corer (inner diameter 5 cm) was used to collect a sediment core at each sampling site. We extruded the first 10 cm of the sediment profile into an acrylic core sleeve, which was sealed immediately to protect the sample from air. The top 10 cm of sediment can be considered actively exchanging with the overlying water as diffusive processes can occur in sediments this deep. Samples were transported and stored at 4°C until analysis.

Description:

SEDIMENT CHARACTERISTICS: Sediment P speciation laboratory processing: All analyses began within 36 hours of sample collection. Sediments were handled under N2-atmosphere in a glove bag. Samples were first transferred from the transport core sleeve into plastic bags. The sediments were then thoroughly homogenized within the bags before removing subsamples with a clean laboratory scoopula. Three replicate subsamples from each sampling site were analyzed for four mobile P species via sequential extraction following the methods of Lukkari and others (2007). This method was modified from the work of Jensen and Thamdrup (1993) and Psenner and Puckso (1988) and has been shown to yield reliable results for determining mobile sediment P pools. To begin the sequential P extractions, subsamples of fresh sediment equivalent to 0.5 g of dry sediment were weighed and placed into 50 mL polyethylene centrifuge tubes. This same sediment pellet was used throughout the sequential extraction procedure. All extractions were performed at 25°C. Centrifuge time and speed (30 minutes at 3000 rpm) as well as shaker table speed (200 rpm) were consistent across extractions. Following each extraction, the extract was preserved with concentrated sulfuric acid to pH 2 to keep iron and manganese soluble and achieve the required pH for color development during SRP and TP analyses. All SRP and TP concentrations were corrected for the extractant volume and the mass of sediment used to determine the P concentration per gram of dry sediment.

Instrument(s):Seal Analytical AQ2 Discrete Analyzer for all SRP and TP analyses
Description:

SEDIMENT CHARACTERISTICS: Sediment P speciation – Loosely-bound P extraction: To quantify loosely-sorbed and pore water P, the sediment pellet was first extracted in 50 mL of 0.46 M N2-purged sodium chloride (NaCl). This solution was added to the centrifuge tubes containing the sediment pellet, and the samples were placed on a shaker table for one hour. The samples were centrifuged and the supernatant collected immediately afterwards. The sediment pellet was rinsed with another 50 mL of 0.46 M N2-purged NaCl for 15 minutes and centrifuged, and the rinse solution was combined with the first supernatant. The combined extract solution was preserved before undergoing persulfate digestion and analysis for TP (Standard Methods 4500-P B.5, E).

Description:

SEDIMENT CHARACTERISTICS: Sediment P speciation – Redox-sensitive P extraction: Redox-sensitive P species were extracted in 50 mL of 0.11 M bicarbonate – 0.1 M sodium dithionate (BD) solution. Samples were shaken for one hour and the supernatant was collected following centrifuging. This extraction included two rinses with BD solution (50 mL each) and one NaCl rinse (50 mL). Each rinse was 15 minutes on the shaker table, after which the sample was centrifuged. All of the rinse supernatants were combined together with the original extraction supernatant. The combined supernatant was bubbled with compressed air for at least 90 minutes in the fume hood to remove dithionite. The combined extract solution was preserved, digested, and analyzed for TP.

Description:

SEDIMENT CHARACTERISTICS: Sediment P speciation – Aluminum-bound and labile organic P: Labile organic P and P associated with aluminum oxides were determined with a sodium hydroxide (NaOH) extraction. First 50 mL of 0.1 M NaOH was added to the tube containing the sediment pellet. These samples were shaken for 18 hours and the supernatant was collected after centrifuging. One 0.1 NaOH (50 mL) rinse was used, followed by one 0.46 M NaCl rinse (50 mL). Each rinse takes 15 minutes, after which the sample was centrifuged. All of the rinse extracts were combined together with the original extraction supernatant. The supernatant was analyzed in two portions. First, a portion was filtered (0.45µm GF/C filters) and analyzed for SRP (Standard Methods 4500-P E). This SRP concentration was used to calculate the sediment concentration of aluminum-bound P. The remaining supernatant was digested and analyzed for TP. The labile organic P fraction was determined as the difference between the total NaOH-extractable P and the subsample analyzed for aluminum-bound P.

Description:

SEDIMENT CHARACTERISTICS: Sediment physical properties: For analysis of physical characteristics, a 0.4 to 0.5 g subsample was first measured into a pre-weighed, oven-dried aluminum weigh boat. The subsamples were then placed in a drying oven at 104 + 1°C for at least 2 hours to dry to a constant mass. The wet and dry masses of each subsample were used to calculate sediment moisture content. The samples were then combusted in a muffle furnace for 2 hours at 550°C and weighed again to calculate organic matter content as loss-on-ignition and estimate bulk density (Håkanson & Jansson 2002).

Description:

SEDIMENT CHARACTERISTICS: Sediment total phosphorus: Sediments were dried for 24 hours, ground into a fine powder with a mortar and pestle, and stored in glass scintillation vials until analysis. For the acid digestion, we first weighed 0.2 g of the dried, ground sediment and combusted it at 550°C for 2 hours. We then boiled the sediment samples on a digestion block in 50 mL of 1 M HCl for 2 hours at 150°C. Following digestion, we brought the samples back up to volume using 50 mL of deionized water. Samples were then pH adjusted to 2 using 1.5 M NaOH before analysis of TP (Standard Methods 4500-P B.5, E). All concentrations were corrected for pH adjustments and dilution and standardized by the sediment mass used.

Description:

WATER TEMPERATURE: We constructed temperature chains by securing HOBO Pendant temperature loggers on sensor strings that we installed vertically in the water column, secured between a buoy and an anchor. Loggers were placed every 0.5 up to 3 meters deep, and then every 1 meter to the bottom of the reservoir. Loggers recorded temperature every hour.

Instrument(s):HOBO 8K Pendant Temperature/Alarm (Waterproof) Data Logger
Description:

WATER CHEMISTRY: Epilimnetic water samples were taken by lowering the sample bottle up to elbow-depth below the surface of the water. The bottle was filled and rinsed with lake water three times before taking the water sample. Hypolimnetic samples were taken using a Van Dorn sampler lowered to 0.5 meters about the sediment-water interface. Sample bottles were rinsed three times with the hypolimnetic water before being filled with sample water. SRP samples were filtered (0.45µm GF/C filters), preserved with concentrated sulfuric acid, and stored at 4 degrees C before being analyzed in duplicate using the molybdenum blue method on a Seal Analytical AQ2 Discrete Analyzer. TP samples were preserved with concentrated sulfuric acid and stored at 4 degrees C before being digested and analyzed in duplicate using the molybdenum blue method on a Seal Analytical AQ2 Discrete Analyzer. NOx samples were filtered (0.45µm GF/C filters), preserved with concentrated sulfuric acid, and stored at 4 degrees C before being analyzed in duplicate on an Agilent spectrophotometer. TN samples were preserved with concentrated sulfuric acid and stored at 4 degrees C before being digested and analyzed in duplicate on an Agilent Spectrophotometer. For TSS, 100-200 mL of sample water were filtered onto pre-combusted and pre-weighed 0.45µm GF/C filters. Filters were dried to a constant mass at 105 degrees C, weighed, combusted for 30 minutes at 550 degrees C, and weighed again. Abstract:

Internal phosphorus (P) loading describes the mobilization and release of P from lakebed sediments into the overlying water where it may be available for algal uptake. Sediment P sources are especially influential in shallow lakes and reservoirs. In these systems, substantial internal P loads often fuel algal blooms and delay eutrophication recovery. A complex and interacting suite of mechanisms controls sediment P release. Sediment resuspension due to wave disturbance or bioturbation releases pore water and surface sorbed P, reducing conditions such as summer anoxia can mobilize redox-sensitive P species (i.e., iron- and manganese-bound P), and microbial decomposition may liberate P associated with labile organic materials. Sediment P release varies across space and time within individual waterbodies due to dynamic biogeochemical conditions across the lakebed. Within a waterbody, there may be points in space and time that disproportionately influence system behavior through high rates of biogeochemical activity (hot spots and hot moments). There are likely sediment patches and times throughout the year in temperate lakes and reservoirs with exceptionally high rates of P release under certain biogeochemical conditions. However, there has been little quantitative analysis of hot spots and hot moments of internal P loading, especially in the context of sediment P composition as a controlling variable. We evaluated spatiotemporal variation in sediment P flux rates in a temperate, hypereutrophic reservoir to quantify hot spots and hot moments of sediment P release. We further surveyed sediment P composition, reservoir thermal structure, and water chemistry to understand environmental conditions associated with high P flux rates. Our study asserts that shallow waterbodies are spatially complex and temporally dynamic systems and that this heterogeneity affects ecosystem function.

Research Questions: (Q1) When and where to hot spots and hot moments of sediment P flux rates occur, and what are the underlying mechanisms? (Q2) How does the slow variable (i.e., the chemical composition of the sediment P pool) change over space and time, and how do these changes relate to P flux rates? (Q3) How do hot spots and hot moments of internal loading scale to the ecosystem level?
